I’ve been in the printing business for over 20 years. Like many printers, I’ve seen some good years and some bad. Unfortunately, there were not as many good years as I would like. It’s so frustrating to work so hard and to see so little profit at the end of each month. The day finally came when I yelled in disgust, “enough is enough!” I had to face the facts. Something had to change because I was working myself to death. There HAD to be a better way . . .

I have a dear friend who also ran a printing business. But his was different. At the end of every month when I was stressed out because of the shortage of cash, he is positive and having a blast. What was he doing different? What does he know that I don’t? I had to find out!

My friend had me pull a recent job. He asked me, “When was the last time you re-quoted this job?” I hung my head with embarrassment; it had been at least 5 or 6 years. “This is not good,” my friend told me in the nicest way possible. So we sat down and quoted this job. To my dismay, I had underbid the job by $600.00.

The problem got worse. We print this job about every 6 weeks. I thought, this can’t be right. I’m losing $600.00 every 6 weeks? We realized at this time the estimator was right and I was wrong. How much money have I left on the table? If you figured I could have adjusted the quote by $600 3 years earlier, I lost over $15,000 in pure profits. And that was with just one job. How many other jobs had I not re-quoted in years? I saw just by correcting this first mistake, most, if not all of my cash flow problems could be cured.

I knew right then I was leaving 10 bucks on the table with this small order.

SOLUTION #4: CHARGING “MAKE READY” FEES ARE A MUST! WITHOUT THEM, YOU HAVE A BIG HOLE DRAINING YOUR COMPANY’S PROFITS!!!!

At this point, my world has been turned upside down. It was hard to pay attention to the next important lesson my friend wanted to show me because all I can see is dollar signs drifting out the front door.

Then he turned to me and asked, “Does anybody give you anything for free these days?” My body tensed up. “So what’s the big deal about bindery costs?” I asked. He explained the cost of casualness and how being nice to your customers does NOT mean you have to throw in what looks like little, insignificant costs for free in the estimate.

Wow. My eyes are now open to another mistake we make as printers and estimators in our industry. Giving away bindery services, cutting, folding, labeling, etc. quickly erodes the fair profits you should be earning.

SOLUTION #5: CHARGE FOR EVERYTHING YOU DO IN EACH JOB – PLEASE DO NOT BE CASUAL OR LOOSE WITH THE REAL VALUE YOU CREATE FOR YOUR CLIENTS.
